Honorable Michael J. Streit joined Sullivan & Ward, P.C. after serving more than 27 years on the bench as a judge of the Iowa District Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals, and the Iowa Supreme Court. His practice focuses on mediation, arbitration, litigation, ethics, contracts, and matters involving judicial independence and fair courts. Former Justice Streit received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his role in the Iowa Supreme Court decision recognizing marriage equality.
Born in Sheldon, Iowa, Justice Streit earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1972 and graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1975, where he served on the law review and as editor-in-chief of the school’s monthly law journal. Before joining the bench, he practiced law in Chariton, Iowa, representing farmers, businesses, and individuals, and served as both Assistant Lucas County Attorney and Lucas County Attorney.
During his judicial career, Justice Streit served on the Iowa Court of Appeals and the Iowa Supreme Court, authoring hundreds of appellate opinions and helping shape Iowa law. He has received numerous honors for his service to the legal profession, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of San Diego. He remains committed to promoting professionalism, ethics, and public confidence in Iowa’s courts through education, mentorship, and public service.
