Mr. Smith maintains a multi-disciplinary practice providing clients with a wide range of legal services.  Emphasizing advocacy, innovation, and key relationships, Mr. Smith offers strategic representation options for clients large and small.

Mr. Smith serves as Counsel for the Regulatory Compliance Group, a consortium of Iowa rural electric generation and transmission and distribution cooperatives.  In this role, Mr. Smith addresses the collective regulatory needs of industry members regarding environmental law, operational safety, transportation regulation, employment and labor law, emergency response efforts (including storm recovery and FEMA Assistance programs), hazard mitigation strategies, liability reduction, enterprise productivity, and compliance strategies at the federal, state, and local levels.

Mr. Smith also represents clients with a broad spectrum of legal needs in the areas of:

Prior to his association with the Firm, Mr. Smith practiced at a large law firm in Des Moines.  In 2015, he joined the Office of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Iowa as Deputy Legal Counsel for the administration of Governor Terry E. Branstad.  In 2017, Mr. Smith was promoted to Legal Counsel for the Office of the Governor under Governor Kim Reynolds and Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg.  Upon leaving the Governor’s Office, Mr. Smith founded his own private law practice and consulting firm before joining Sullivan & Ward, P.C. in 2020.

Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.  He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law where he was the Executive Submissions Editor for the Virginia Journal of Law & Politics.

Mr. Smith is a member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, the Polk County Bar Association, and the Electric Cooperative Bar Association.  He is admitted to practice law in all Iowa State Courts, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, and the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Outside of the office, Mr. Smith enjoys spending time with his daughter, traveling, and watching sports.
